The renovation project was led and managed by SIGHT Engineering, which played a central role in coordinating and executing the restoration works. The project required a careful balance between structural rehabilitation, modern technical requirements, and the preservation of the building’s historic architectural identity.
One of the most significant interventions was the faithful reconstruction of the original roof structure of the Saint Catherine Convent using cedar wood, restoring an important feature of the historic building that had been removed during expansion works in 1974.
Construction began in November 2022 and was completed in approximately one year, despite logistical challenges, including delays in transporting materials following the February 2023 earthquake in Turkey. The restoration involved international specialists and received financial support from organizations such as L’Œuvre d’Orient, ALIPH, and Hungary Helps.
Founded in 1880, Zahrat el-Ihsan continues its educational and social mission today, welcoming around 936 students from different religious communities. The successful completion of the project highlights SIGHT Engineering’s expertise in managing complex restoration works and preserving Lebanon’s architectural heritage.
